Why Nutrition Matters

14/07/2021

Food has a decisive influence on the process of human development. In childhood, physical and intellectual changes are massively influenced by the quality of nutrition received. The reality of nutrition in Guatemala means that our Nutrition Programme is a vital part of enabling students to achieve all their goals.

Guatemala has the fourth highest rate of chronic malnutrition in the world, where 50% of children under five are malnourished.

The main reason why many children do not have access to healthy food is that 60% of the population lives below the poverty line. Because of the lack of resources, junk food and soda tends to be more accessible than healthier options. Without access to healthy food, children are at higher risk of diet-related conditions that disrupts their development.

Other problems that affect access to healthy food and nutrition are the lack of job opportunities, gender inequality, limited access to quality education, lack of familiy planning programs, limited access to care for pregnant women, lack of clean water (which can cause a disease), limited access to health care and climate change affecting agriculture.

During the critical months of lockdown, food distribution was the only physical contact we had with families. Our Nutrition program has changed during the years, but the mission stays the same: Providing a dignified nutrition to our community.

Due to these shared experiences we are now closer to our local community and better at responding to their nutritional needs.

We are incredibly grateful for the consistent support of our sponsors, donors, staff and families. We have several first graders without nutrition sponsors and we'd be delighted to have you join us for just £13 a month. So why not forgo a take-out one night and make a month's worth of difference to one of our students? Meet our first grader's and find out how to become a sponsor
