On Thursday 16 June our golfers took to the Nottingham Golf & Country Club Championship course on a beautiful June summer day. Our teams battled it out with a high standard of competition with Fluent Money crowned as the winners finishing on 94. Their reward was a four-ball at a choice of one of 80 golf courses across the UK. Congratulations!
The heat must have got to our players as the afternoon wore on, as all but one team lost the yellow ball they’d been given for a round-robin team competition, so well done to Castlegate Capital for keeping hold of theirs!
At the 14th hole, the players had an extra challenge. They were met by the club’s pro golfer to see if they could drive their shot further. Brilliantly six players were able to ‘Beat the Pro’ and the winning name out of the hat to win a stand bag was Andy Twells.
Our teams including Engage, Podium and Peter Simons financial services relaxed on the terrace as their fellow competitors completed their rounds and then enjoyed dinner and an overview of our Special Education programme led by our Guatemalan teacher Gustavo.
Unfortunately we’re not eligible this year to apply to a grant giver that has previously been funding this element of work. Via video, the teams heard from Gustavo about his work and how his role at The School of Hope is so transformative for the students in his care.
After dinner, former Liverpool and Wales’ footballer Dean Saunders stepped up to entertain the players with his memories of being courted to be signed by the late, great Brian Clough.
We were utterly delighted that attendance at the event, our raffle and supporting auction raised the majority of the £7,600 to fund the programme, the rest of which was amazingly funded by one of the golfers. Upon hearing the words of our CEO, Dave McKee's, he reflected on his own learning difficulties which were not addressed in childhood and was moved to top-up to the total required.
An enormous thank you to all of our raffle and auction prize donors and Dean Saunders for their donations meaning that every penny raised on the day will go directly to Guatemala.
Our golf day is one of the highlights of our events calendar. If you would be interesting in joining us next year or would like to suggest a different event to fundraise to raise funds for The School of Hope, we’d love to hear from you.
