NGO in Guatemala breaking the Cycle of Poverty through Education

Are you looking for volunteer opportunities in Antigua, Guatemala? Whether you're in your gap year, travelling, or simply want to volunteer abroad, visitors and volunteers in Guatemala make a great contribution to the project and the children love having someone new to play with during break times!

Volunteers help EFTC in so many ways! by creating new after-school programs, doing one-on-one work with our students or by supporting existing programs that we know will help improve the lives of our children and their families. We offer many different volunteer opportunities where you’ll be supporting disadvantaged families, children and young adults through your work at our School of Hope in Jocotenango, (just 15 minutes away by bus from Antigua, Guatemala).

What are the prerequisites for being a volunteer?

You must be aged 18yrs or older at the time when you apply to volunteer with us. If you are younger you can still come, but must be accompanied by an adult.

How much does it cost to volunteer with us?
  • If you are not already in Antigua, Guatemala, EFTC asks for a contribution of £50 / $75 / 70, which covers the expense of running our volunteer program and the assistance of our Volunteer Coordinator with lodging and transportation if needed.
  • For volunteers who fundraise the equivalent of £150 or more for EFTC prior to their arrival, this fee will be waived. If you are interested in raising some funds prior to your arrival and would like to know specific projects or needs that the school has, please email us.
  • If you're already in Antigua, Guatemala, please contact our Coordinator to ask about special fees. Also, contact us for special volunteer fees for groups of 6 or more.
  • If you're Guatemalan, this fee will be waived.
  • Fees can be paid through any of our payment optionsIf you need help with this, you can check out Trusts that offer funding for international volunteering.
What is the volunteer process?
  1. Look at our many volunteer opportunities in the Volunteer Roles and Internships section.
  2. Fill out the application.
  3. Send us a copy of your CV.
  4. We will then get back to you with more details within a week of receiving your application.
  5. If you are from the UK, you need to obtain a DBS check, which can take up to two months to receive so please make sure you give yourself enough time. If you're not from the UK, we will need to contact your references before you are able to start volunteering at our school.
Where in Guatemala am I going to live?
Volunteers usually prefer to live in the nearby town of Antigua instead of Jocotenango, as it offers a wide array of services and tourist attractions, such as cafés, Spanish schools, restaurants, bars and beautiful ancient ruins and churches.
You can choose your own acommodation or stay with one of our trusted 'host families' in the town of Antigua. They generally charge Q700 (about £64  / US$93 / 84) per person, per week. You’d have your own bedroom and share the bathroom, dining room and living area. Depending on the time of year you visit there might be other volunteers living in the same house. In the case of a group travelling together, we have large enough host houses where you can all stay together.

Antigua Guatemala

Our school is located about 15 minutes from the beautiful Antigua, a vibrant yet peaceful colonial town and the most visited destination in Guatemala. Antigua feels like a portal to another century. The nearly 500-year-old city is cradled by three volcanoes and filled with colonial-era mansions, churches and convents. The city is a Unesco World Heritage site. In addition to the striking 17th- and 18th-century ruins right in the center of town, the city offers an array of restaurants, boutiques and bars with live music. Visitors can browse the craft markets, sip an espresso at a coffee farm, watch a film or a play at the many cafés and cultural centers and go up the Cerro de la Cruz, only 20 mins walk away, to get an amazing view of the whole town. If you're wondering what it would be like to volunteer with us, read these blog posts by our past volunteers:
volunteer stories Lauren Lauren Martin
"I cannot recommend volunteering at the School of Hope enough. You get a chance to do something completely different and, although sad to leave, I left knowing I had made a positive contribution. You will come away a changed person
, knowing that the school, with its children and staff, have helped you so much more than you have helped them."
Volunteer in Antigua Guatemala Tam Winter
"I was particularly keen to contribute to the musical education of the children, so I spoke to the staff. They were highly enthusiastic about the idea, and for my final two weeks I taught six classes a week, including two after-school guitar classes, which involved teaching the children songs that I knew."

"Every time I heard my namecalled  from the other side of the playground and someone rushed towards me, wrapped a bracelet around my wrist or tattooed my arms all over with pen 'te amo's', I grew a little bit more attached to the wonderful children at the School of Hope."
Volunteer in Guatemala Jen Betts

"The school is seen as a safe environment, a place they can learn and where they can just be children. It was quite a humbling and touching experience, and definitely not something I will ever forget.
I’m happy and grateful to be a part of this community."
