My name is Dorcas Elizabeth Orenos Subuyuj. I am 11 years old and I am in the third grade. I live in Jocotenango. I live with my mum and my seven brothers and sisters. My dad died two years ago.
When did you start studying in the Foundation and how did you hear about the Project?
I started studying here two and a half years ago when I was in the first grade. My mum decided that she wanted me to study with the Foundation because we didn’t have enough money and my mum has always sold tortillas for a living. Somebody told her about the Foundation and she went and filled in the application form. Then the Foundation visited us and we were told that we could study there.
What is your family like? Do you have any brothers and sisters? Do they go to school?
My family is very nice. We all get on well and I have four brothers and sisters that are also affiliated with the project. Sucely is in the first grade, Jennifer is in the second grade, Joseline and Henry are in the fifth grade.
I also have three sisters that do not study. Joseline is 16 years old and works to help my mum. Catherine is only 3 years old and Carlos is only 6 months old.
What are your favourite classes and why?
My favourite class is Math because I like numbers and multiplication a lot. I also like Language and Communication because, in this class, I have learnt many things and I especially like stories, legends, sayings and it has helped me to communicate with people.
If you could change anything about your school, what would you do?
I would like there to be more garbage bin because sometimes the school is dirty because kids don’t throw their garbage in its place and I would like to see it cleaner. I would also like there to be more bathrooms so that they are in a better shape and also a place where you can read without interruptions.
Describe some of your best moments in the Foundation and why?
What I always remember is having known my sponsor, Dan, and above all, playing a lot with him and spending with him. He was a volunteer in my class and he helped me in class whe I needed it. I like to be here a lot too because I have met lots of friends and I play with them during break time.
Also, with my family, we have had lots of happy moments in the Foundation. We have received lots of help. We have been given food, corrugated iron so that we can fix our roof and I am happy because of that because they always find a way to help us.
What do you want to do when you grow up and why?
I want to be a Teacher because I would like to teach everything I know and more to children so that Guatemala keeps changing.
In your opinion, what are the biggest problems that children and young people face in your community?
In my opinion, I have seen lots of violence and even young people kill other people. I have also seen young people doing drugs, drinking alcohol and smoking on the streets, in the parks and in public places and I think these are some of the big problems.
If you were president, What would you do?
If I were president, I would love to help people and support education because without education you cannot go forward.
What is your favourite sport and why?
I like football because I love to run and score goals so that we can win.
The world cup is getting close, who do you think will win and who do you want to win?
I think that England will win because they are a good team and I hope that they will win too.
In the future, how would you like to see the Foundation? What changes would you make?
I would like the desks to be changes and I would also like to have English classes more frequently.
Do you know who you sponsor is?
Yes I know my sponsor. His name is Dan and he is very caring with me.
How have you had contact with your sponsor?
I have had contact with Dan through letters, photos, presents but, the most special, through visits.
How does that contact make you feel?
I feel very happy because through all of that I have realized that he cares a lot about me and his letters, visits, presents show me that he cares a lot about me.
