Children Interviews

"Education is a way of learning so many different things where one fills themselves with values. It teaches you to be a better person as well as providing you with things that will give you with a better future, such as, English and Maths."

Irma was interviewed in June 2010; she was 17 and in third grade at secondary school. She is Miss 'Esperanza' (the name of the school); each year, the secondary school students elect someone to take on this position, which is similar to a Head Girl but involves representing the school in extra-curricular activities.

"My name is Irma Jose Andres and I am 17 years old...I have three brothers and one sister."

"I like to study and I like to have friends. I also participate in a church youth group...I think that I am capable of doing anything that I put my mind to."

"It feels good [to be Miss Esperanza] because you get to represent the school and you are the main role model in the school."

"I like to meet the people that come from England, as many times, they help us in our English class and we learn a lot from them."

"I would also like one day, when I have finished my studies, to have a family and be able to take care of them and give them the best. I would like to give them what my parents weren’t able to give to me."

Dorcas was interviewed in May 2010; she was 11 and in third grade.

These are just a few of the things Dorcas had to say:Dorcas_2

"My name is Dorcas Elizabeth Orenos Subuyuj. I am 11 years old and I am in the third grade. I live in Jocotenango, with my mum and my seven brothers and sisters. My dad died two years ago."

"I started studying here two and a half years ago when I was in the first grade. My mum decided that she wanted me to study with the Foundation because we didn’t have enough money and my mum has always sold tortillas for a living. Somebody told her about the Foundation and she went and filled in the application form. Then the Foundation visited us and we were told that we could study there."

"I want to be a teacher because I would like to teach everything I know and more to children so that Guatemala keeps changing."

"If I were president, I would love to help people and support education because without education you cannot go forward."

"What I always remember is having known my sponsor, Dan, and above all, playing a lot with him and spending with him. He was a volunteer in my class and he helped me in class when I needed it. I like to be here a lot too because I have met lots of friends and I play with them during break time."

Luis studied in England in 2009 after proving to be one of the strongest students in the project.

We asked Luis to write a few words about his experience;Luis_Bacajol_Hernandez

"My name is Luis Bacajol Hernandez I never have travelled too far in my life I am vey grateful with the people that I knew here.  They always were kind to me and I never felt uncomfortable to live together with all them.  I could see beautiful places and interesting cities and a lot of things that I never have seen, this was really a great experience to me and my brother.  We went on the London Eye and we could see a wonderful view of London this will be some of the many things that we will remember when we will be back in Guatemala."

Brenda Fabiola was crowned "Miss Esperanza" in our High School in Septmeber 2008. She was 15 years old at the time of writing this.

"For me it is a great honour to represent the Foundation.  It has been very difficult to get where I am now.  I feelBrenda_Fabiola proud to be studying here, I give thanks to God for letting me be here.

The teachers told us that we had to choose two girls from each grade to be put forward for the Miss Esperanza competition.  My class mates chose me.

I think I get on well with the other students; not just in my class but in the whole school.  In the end I won with 37 votes I think - so I had votes from other grades.  It makes me feel proud to know that I get on well with most of the students in the school.

I still have one more year until I finish the third year of Basico High School. After that I will choose my career- perhaps I will study computing or learn to be a secretary.  I want to get my diploma and then get my own job and then one day have a family.

The Foundation has helped me a lot.  Three years ago I joined in the sixth grade of Primary School.  My parents couldn't pay for my schooling and so it was like a present from God to end up in the Foundation.  If that hadn't happened I would probably be working now and my dreams would never come true.
