NGO in Guatemala breaking the Cycle of Poverty through Education

It’s easy for one person to make a big impact
Sponsor a student and help them to pursue their dreams...

How much of my money actually goes towards my sponsor student?

All of it! The money that you donate towards your sponsor student will go directlu to your sponsor student's expenses - we do not use any of that money for our administration costs.

How do I correspond with my sponsor student?

You can send letters and photos at any time to our Sponsorship Coordinator at sponsor@eftc.org.uk. Although we do have a Guatemalan address, the postal system here is very inefficient and unreliable. Any communication will be translated to Spanish, printed and then delivered to your sponsor student. Likewise, any responses from your sponsor student will be scanned, translated and sent back to you via email.

Can I visit my sponsor student?

Of course you are welcome to visit and meet your sponsor student in person! We encourage sponsors to visit, as it strengthens the bond between you and your sponsor student. If you are interested in visiting The School of Hope, please contact our Sponsorship Coordinator at sponsor@eftc.org.uk and we can coordinate your trip. Sponsor visits may include a number of activities, such as a tour of the school, volunteering in a classroom, and fun activities with your sponsor student, such as reading and activity afternoons, special lunches, sports and games, or even a visit to the family home.

Can I send gifts or money?

Your are more than welcome to send a gift to your sponsor student. The easiest way is to send us an extra donation and our Sponsorship Coordinator in Guatemala can organise and purchase a gift for your sponsor student. Take a look at our Sponsorship Gift List to find out about our fun and exciting educational gift packs!

Just as a note, EFTC will retain 20% of all monetary gifts, to enable us to cover the costs of transportation and sending a staff member to purchase the gift.

What are some examples of good gifts?

Our students thrive on learning, so anything educational is always a good choice. Often, the children lack stimulating and educational activities in their homes, so gifts such as reading books, arts and craft materials, card and board games, and colouring books, are truly special for our students. These gifts inspire creativity and imagination in our students, while reminding them that their padrinos (or godparents) want them to have success in their education.

Please keep in mind that all gifts need to be appropriate for your sponsor student's age and the cultural climate here in Guatemala. Any large gifts that exceed our recommended monetary amounts will be dispersed over several months. If you would like to know more about our gifts or if you have an questions, please contact our Sponsorship Coordinator at sponsor@eftc.org.uk.

Can I video chat with my sponsor student?

Video chat (via Skype of Google Hangout) is a great way to get to know your sponsor student better and to maintain regular communication. If you would like to set this up, please contact our Sponsorship Coordinator at sponsor@eftc.org.uk to set up a date and time that works for the both of you. An EFTC staff member will always be present with the student to answer any questions and act as a translater if you need it.

When my sponsor student continues to further education, will I still be able to contact them?

Yes, you are still able to contact your sponsor student, however, because the students are no longer on our campus, it can take longer to get a response. You can absolutely maintain that same communication with letters, video chatting, and gifts, however the response time just tends to be slower due to their different schedules and study commitments.

What happens if my sponsor student graduates, or leaves the school for any reason?
In either case, we always encourage you to stay a part of the family and sponsor another child! In either case, we always encourage you to stay a part of the EFTC family and sponsor another student! The bond you create with a student through to graduation can be incredible, and there is no reason not to start all over again! While students do end up leaving the school under different circumstances, there is always another student who needs your help!

If I must discontinue my sponsorship, what happens to my sponsor student?
We understand that circumstances change - if you must discontinue your sponsorship for any reason, we will immediately start the search for another sponsor! In the meantime, however, there’s no reason to worry - your sponsor student’s access to education will not be in danger. If you need to cancel your sponsorship, please get in touch with the Sponsorship Coordinator at sponsor@eftc.org.uk
