On June 28th 2007 four mad fools left Nottingham to ride the entire route of the 2007 Tour de France in the same number of days as the professionals.  Matt Denman, Mark Wakeling, Amy Smith & Kyle Yost all cycled over 2000 miles in 3 weeks. On Sunday 22nd July Letour2007 was completed safely and no failed doping controls, missed tests or any other form of suspicion swirling around the riders. They almost certainly would have failed tests for excessive levels of fresh baguette sandwiches, pain-au-chocolate and coke, but luckily the UCI don't test for these yet!!

Matt and Mark between them managed to raise £10,715 for Education For The Children, you can read all about their efforts by clicking on the picture below.

On June 18th 2007 we had our annual golf day at Beeston Fields Golf Club.  Most of the teams managed to get round without getting too wet!!  A total of £6,167.23 was raised.  Special thanks go to Tommy Johnson, everyone who donated auction prizes and of course all the teams that took part on a very wet day!

Vogue Developments 'The Winning Team '

On April 1st 2007 we held our first black tie ball at the exclusive Mansion House in Dublin.  Past and present Celtic Football Club teams attended along with a star studded guest list from sport, entertainment and business in Ireland.  The evening was a huge success and we managed to raise a staggering €37,974.31, the most we have made at an event so far.

The Mansion House, Dublin

In February 2007, we hosted a black tie private screening of the new film Goal II at the Soho Hotel, London.  100 people attended the evening.  An auction and a sponsor appeal raised just over £12,000.00.  Special thanks go to Scion Financial Partners Ltd for the organisation, Kingsbridge Asset Management Ltd, John Charcol Associates and Investment Company 7IM for their sponsorship and Danny Murphy, Rio Ferdinand and Simon Holdsworth for their help with the auction.

2006

October/November 2006 - Special thanks go to ‘Open Gate’ Charitable Trust for a very generous donation of £4,000.00, Next Plc for a donation of £250.00 and Fyffes Plc for a donation of £150.00.  We also received an anonymous donation of £7,500.00 to allow us to purchase and insure a vehicle for the foundation to use in Guatemala.  This will allow much more flexibility in collecting food donations and organising medical and dental trips for the children.

Shaun Wright-Phillips in Guatemala

In June of 2007 we were very fortunate to have Shaun Wright-Phillips and some of his family come and visit our schools in Guatemala.  He came over with a TV crew from Chelsea TV to film a documentary which will hopefully highlight the huge social problems that exist in Guatemala.  He had a packed schedule and was willing to do or join in with anything as you can imagine the children loved him!!

He visited the homes of some of our poorest children and was visibly shocked and moved at the poverty he witnessed.  As part of our initiative to install safe & smoke free stoves in the houses of our children, Shaun assisted the ONIL workers at Jeni's house.  As you can imagine there are deadly and debilitating results from constant exposure to this toxic smoke and The World Health Organisation has stated that 'children exposed to the open fires used for cooking in Guatemala will develop permanent lung damage by the age of five'.

The ONIL stoves reduce the smoke emissions from within the houses by 99% as well as providing a much safer alternative to an open fire.  You can see the dramatic difference yourself below.

Shaun and his family are currently arranging some fundraisers in the hope that they will raise enough money to build another school just outside of Jocotenango.  We can't thank him enough for his time and commitment and his offer to work alongside us in trying to educate some of the poorest children in Central America.

We would also like to thank Shaun for all of the time he spent with the children, especially for the 266 shirts he was asked to sign!!  Shaun also has his own website www.clubswp.com where he is promoting Education For The Children.

Stove Campaign

The World Health Organisation has stated that children exposed to the open fires used for cooking in Guatemala will develop permanent lung damage by the age of five.  We felt we could not stand by and watch this inevitability so earlier this year we started an initiative to install a safer alternative into our families homes.

The majority of our families do cook with open wood fires and have no way of properly venting the thick black smoke from their homes.  As you can imagine there are deadly and debilitating results from constant exposure to this toxic smoke.  The stoves we are currently installing reduce the smoke emissions from within the houses by 99% as well as providing a much safer alternative to an open fire.

We started by installing two different models of stove so that we could evaluate the efficiency, and more importantly in such an underdeveloped country, their ease of use.  Our progress in installing the stoves has been slower than first anticipated, this is due to the preferences and differing cooking methods of our families.  Originally we believed that the ONIL stove (www.onilstove.com) would be perfect for every family, but our experience showed that it was too small for some of our bigger families.  A suitable alternative has been found but has delayed some of the installations.  We hope to have installed all of the stoves by the end of this year and will, as promised, send photographs to all of our generous donors.

Some ONIL stoves have recently been installed and instructional workshops have been organised to prepare our other families for their stoves.

Thanks to a big donation from 'The Rufford Maurice Laing Foundation' we have at this stage completed our stove initiative.  A huge thank you to them, and everyone else who has kindly donated a stove.

Nuestros Ahijados

In the spring of 2006, we achieved a huge breakthrough in gaining the support of a well established charitable foundation called 'Nuestros Ahijados' based in Antigua, Guatemala.

Completely free of charge, our children have access to medical consultants, pharmacy and dental care at the Atkinson Family Clinic.

From November 2006, our children will be included in their psychological support programme in which cases of need are targeted and regularly visited for counselling and care.

With the help of Nuestros Ahijados we hope to extend our programme of providing safe, dry homes for the most disadvantaged of our children. You would not believe the conditions some live in!

Our heartfelt thanks go to Patrick Atkinson and his wonderful organisation.

Hurricane Stan - 2005

In early October 2005, Hurricane Stan hit Guatemala hard. Almost 2000 people died, mainly from mudslides, and hundreds of thousands were made homeless. Happening as it did, at the time of the Pakistan Earthquake, understandably, it got little press in this country and received less International aid than it normally could have expected.

The school was only slightly damaged and has been repaired fully. Some of our children were not so lucky and seven families lost their homes. Five of those had been relocated although conditions are far from perfect. The other two families had been less fortunate and lost their homes. We visited both families and felt we must try to help. We obtained permission from the Charities Commission to extend our permitted areas and both families were then re-housed.
