Child Sponsorship

The underlying stability of being able to confidently promise our children the opportunity to complete the education they have begun is our dedicated scholarship programme. Put simply we look for 'padrinos' (godparents) for each of our children. As 'padrinos' you will receive regular letters and information from your child with photos and examination marks. We encourage you to write to your children and hope you form a bond that will last for life. Our existing sponsors have often commented on how rewarding this becomes.

There are two different levels of child sponsorship, this is due to the increased cost of secondary education;

Escuela Proyecto La Esperanza - Primary School

The cost of providing education for a child in primary school is £300.00 per annum or £25.00 per month. As mentioned above, this provides an opportunity to change the life of a child forever, develop a friendship with a particular child and provide much needed support for that child. You would receive a photograph, a personal history and letters from your sponsor child updating you on their progress.

New Basico School - Secondary School

As well as offering primary education at Escuela Proyecto La Esperanza, in January 2007 we opened our own secondary school (called 'Basico' in Guatemala). We have decided to expand for many reasons one being, many children that manage to finish their primary education will not carry on with their studies. They will go out and work and start contributing to their family’s income. For the children that attend our school, they could not afford the cost of public primary school education, let alone public secondary education which is a much higher cost. The present cost of furthering a childs education into secondary school is £375.00 per annum or £31.25 per month.

Teacher Sponsorship

Our teachers are well paid by Guatemala standards and we feel this is important to retain the best quality teachers and to set a responsible example in paying a decent wage. As with the child sponsorship you would receive regular correspondence from the teacher with their progress and the progress of their class. The cost of sponsoring a teacher is currently £2,400 per annum or £200.00 per month.

These sponsorships are vital to us as we attempt to increase the number of children we reach.

One off Donations

For those that would prefer to make a one off donation rather than a regular donation we are happy to discuss a single sponsored need or alternatively if you prefer a simple donation. All donations are of course gratefully received.

Stove Campaign

The majority of our families currently cook with open wood fires and have no way of properly venting the thick black smoke from their homes.  As you can imagine there are deadly and debilitating results from constant exposure to this toxic smoke.  The World Health Organisation has stated that children exposed to the open fires used for cooking in Guatemala will develop permanent lung damage by the age of five.  We felt we could not stand by and watch this inevitability so earlier this year we started an initiative to install a safer alternative into our families homes.  The stoves we are currently installing reduce the smoke emissions from within the houses by 99% as well as providing a much safer alternative to an open fire.

We started by installing two different models of stove so that we could evaluate the efficiency, and more importantly in such an underdeveloped country, their ease of use.  Our progress in installing the stoves has been slower than first anticipated, this is due to the preferences and differing cooking methods of our families.  Originally we believed that the ONIL stove (www.onilstove.com) would be perfect for every family, but our experience showed that it was too small for some of our bigger families.  A suitable alternative has been found but has delayed some of the installations.  We hope to have installed all of the stoves by the end of this year and will, as promised, send photographs to all of our generous donors.

We are also arranging instructional workshops to prepare our families for their stoves and to ensure that they are being used to their full potential.

The cost of supplying a safer alternative and guaranteeing a family clean air to breathe in their homes is only £80.00.  In total 102 of our families would benefit from an improved stove, we still need to find sponsors for a further 32 familes.  If you or any of your colleagues or friends would like to help any of our children, you can either send a cheque made payable to 'Education For The Children' or contact us on tel: 0115 8526688 or e-mail on emma@eftc.org.uk.

Corresponding with your child

If you would like to write to your sponsored child due to problems with customs it is much better and safer to send all letters to the UK office.  We will then take them with us on our next trip out to Guatemala, this way we can also get them translated for you.

Birthday or Christmas Gifts

If you would like to send your sponsored child a birthday or christmas gift, the best thing to do is send us a cheque stating that the money is to be used to buy your child a gift, we suggest no more than $20.  We will then ask a representative of the school to either go and buy something for your child or take your child to the market so they can choose what they would like.  If you send more than $20 we ask that the extra money can be used to buy gifts for children whose sponsors were not able to send them anything or for those children who don't have a sponsor at all.

If you would prefer to buy them something then as long as it isn't too big and is packable we will make sure the gift goes out to Guatemala with the next person due to visit the schools.  As above you will need to send this to our UK office.

For further information or should you have any other questions please do not hestitate to contact us on 0115 8526688 or emma@eftc.org.uk.
