Guatemalans have suffered greatly in the past. During the Guatemalan Civil War of the eighties and early nineties at least 200,000 people were brutally murdered.

Guatemala’s civil war finally ended in 1996 with the signing of the peace accords and conditions began to improve. The 2007 elections saw the election of a left-wing government which intended to fight crime through reducing poverty. Small improvements were made to the living standards of the poor in Guatemala but crime, inequality and human rights remain large areas of concern. There is hope that the 2011 elections will bring changes to education and welfare and further improve conditions in Guatemala.
