NGO in Guatemala breaking the Cycle of Poverty through Education

More than 679 children and young adults study at EFTC's School of Hope in Guatemala. We support children from Kindergarten all the way to University, in pursuit of their dreams. Many of our students are first generation learners; working hard to lift their families out of the cycle of poverty.

We run an ESL (English as a Second Language) programmewhich provides our students a lot more English teaching than they do in government schools. We also offer Reading, IT, Gardening and Sex Education classes, among others.

Nutrition and Water

In Guatemala, 24% of children under five are underweight and 46% suffer stunted growth caused by chronic malnutrition. Many of our students receive little food at home, so healthy and nutritious school meals are vital to their wellbeing ; not only do they help with physical development, they also help them stay focused at school throughout the day.

Prior to our water filter campaign, none of the families we work with had access to safe water. The water they drank and cooked with was dirty and dangerously contaminated and, as a result, the children were frequently ill and absent from classes.

Healthcare and medicines are inaccessible and too expensive for the families we work with. Visiting professionals administer regular health checks to ensure that all our children are well. Students and their families receive healthcare essentials at the school, from toothbrushes to hearing aids, glasses and life-saving operations. Workshops also help them gain a better understanding about health and hygiene.

We also have school psychologists who work with our most vulnerable children to overcome obstacles such as abuse, abandonment and neglect.

Social Services

The conditions our students live in are difficult for many of us to come to terms with. Houses usually have loose sheets of corrugated metal for walls and either mud or concrete floors: families sleep cramped together in shared beds. Often, water seeps or floods into our students' homes during rainy season. Many families live on steep hillsides; at risk of damage from landslides and erosion. Thanks to kind donations and the hard work of volunteers, the NGO has helped fix and rebuild many homes to provide a safe and dry place for our families.

The Foundation House
The NGO runs a house that offers refuge to our most vulnerable families. The house has opened its doors to orphans, students or their relatives who are in poor health, those prevented from living in their homes for legal reasons or eviction, and those whose homes have been destroyed by natural causes. Since 2008, over 50 students and their families have lived in the Foundation House.

Further Education

In Guatemala, only 10% of students graduate high school. That's why we created the Further Education Programme, which provides School of Hope graduates with the opportunity to continue their education by giving them a financial scholarship to move on to higher education, from high school through university.

While scholarships support students financially, the Further Education Team supports students emotionally and academically, making sure they don’t drop out by motivating them through workshops and giving them vocational guidance and career advice. They also work on students' leadership and life skills and assist them in finding work placements.
