Cristian Galindo Monroy

We found out a few months ago that one of the children within our foundation, Cristian, was suffering from a very serious medical condition .  He is 6 years old, and was due to start in prep this year at our school, Escuela Proyecto La Esperanza.

Since then we have had several doctors opinions in Guatemala and originally it was thought that he was suffering from 'aplastic anaemia' which is very rare in young children.

Unfortunately, Cristian has just taken a turn for the worse and requires an immediate blood transfusion.  The last doctor to see him has now confirmed that he is suffering from a form of Leukemia and not aplastic anaemia.  He is currently having more tests to try and work out what form of Leukemia he is suffering from.   Once this has been established, we will know what we are looking at and will be able to research places, possibly in the US or over here, that might be able to help him.

Cristian waiting at hospital

Friday 25th January 2008

Cristian is out of intensive care after several blood transfusions.   His results have come back inconclusive, therefore the doctors still can't properly diagnose him.  He is having a bone marrow test this afternoon which is supposed to be incredibly painful, however we won't get the results for some time.  It is very frustrating but we cannot help Cristian until we are sure of what he is suffering from.  His mum is obviously keen for him to stay in Guatemala if possible so there is no action for now.  He is currently in UNOP hospital in Guatemala City.

April 2008

Cristian has been diagnosed with a form of Leukemia they can treat in Guatemala.  He is now undergoing treatment and is reacting well.  The doctors have said that it will do him good to be in a normal environment with other children and recommends that he goes to school.   He started in our prepa class at Escuela Proyecto La Esperanza this week, with his treatment he will probably miss every friday for a while but at least he will be at school for the rest of the time.

We will keep you updated on his progress.
