We are slowly trying to improve the quality of life for our children in Guatemala- take a look below to see how. Water Filter CampaignOur children were frequently becoming sick, and it soon became apparent to us that this was due to the water. None of our families had access to a safe water supply and so we have decided that this has to change. For just £20 we can buy a water filter which will give safe, clean water to a whole family. This amount will also cover the replacement filter needed after 18 months. We plan to buy a water filter for every family in the Foundation. If you wish to donate a water filter to a Guatemalan family, please click below and help us succeed in this vital campaign. I want to donate a water filter to a Guatemalan family
Stove CampaignThe World Health Organisation has stated that children exposed to the open fires used for cooking in Guatemala will develop permanent lung damage by the age of five. We felt we could not stand by and watch this inevitability so earlier this year we started an initiative to install a safer alternative into our families homes. The majority of our families do cook with open wood fires and have no way of properly venting the thick black smoke from their homes. As you can imagine there are deadly and debilitating results from constant exposure to this toxic smoke. The stoves we are currently installing reduce the smoke emissions from within the houses by 99% as well as providing a much safer alternative to an open fire. We started by installing two different models of stove so that we could evaluate the efficiency, and more importantly in such an underdeveloped country, their ease of use. Our progress in installing the stoves has been slower than first anticipated, this is due to the preferences and differing cooking methods of our families. Originally we believed that the ONIL stove (www.onilstove.com) would be perfect for every family, but our experience showed that it was too small for some of our bigger families. A suitable alternative has been found but has delayed some of the installations. We hope to have installed all of the stoves by the end of this year and will, as promised, send photographs to all of our generous onors. Some ONIL stoves have recently been installed and instructional workshops have been organised to prepare our other families for their stoves. Thanks to a big donation from 'The Rufford Maurice Laing Foundation' we have at this stage completed our stove initiative. A huge thank you to them, and everyone else who has kindly donated a stove.
